Twenty-Two

“Wake up, Flower.” A warm, familiar voice roused my mind from the dark place I had gone. “Let me see those emerald eyes.” There was a pleading note in his raspy voice.

I groaned at the ache pounding through my head and attempted to stretch, but it felt like stones weighed down every limb on my body.

“Caliban?” My dry throat croaked, and I forced my eyes open through the buttery rays of light streaming through the window and directly onto my face.

“Adora, thank the gods.” He breathed a sigh of relief and my bleary eyes finally landed on the King’s bright and handsome face. He looked healthy and my lips pulled at the corner for a smile.

“You’re alive.” My hand caressed his face. I needed to feel him and prove to myself this wasn’t a dream. My eyes traveled down his chest and abdomen where his black robe parted. Only a slight bruise remained where the gaping wound had been.

“Me? Of course, I’m alive after what you did. You saved me.” His face got closer, and the King’s mouth slanted over mine. I welcomed him home with my lips, meeting his fervor in kind.

“I’m sorry, my father... I’m sorry that he…”

“No, that wasn’t your fault, and I won’t have you thinking that it was. If anything, I’m disappointed in myself for not thinking of the possibility Helios would do something like this.” A warm hand stroked my cheek, and I closed my eyes, leaning in to enjoy the comfort of his touch.

“My being here caused it.”

“And your presence here is my doing,” Caliban half chuckled, and half sighed. “Yet I still can’t bring myself to regret it.”

“You could have died,” I objected.

“Would you have missed me?” He purred, leaning over me. I balked at his curving smirk and darkening eyes.

“Of course not,” I huffed. “In fact, it was so peaceful while you were away. I’ll miss the silence.”

“Oh, so I’m to believe you didn’t miss me at all white I was on tour?” Those amber eyes bored into me.

“No,” I lied. His smile spread, and he revealed his teeth in a wide grin. “But I’m still glad you’re not dead.”

Caliban released his smile and slumped back on the bed next to me. He laid on his side with his head on his hand, looking down at me. For a few moments we just stared at each other and I couldn’t stop seeing all that blood in my memories.

“I wasn’t wearing my armor. I let my guard down since we were so close to the capital and there was a group of us. It was foolish of me not to expect retaliation for taking you.” The King’s free hand reached out to push a stray curl out of my face, and I sighed at the feeling of his light touch on my cheek.

“What will you do now?” I reached up to grab his hand and keep his palm in place against my face.

“There was no mercenary left alive. If Helios didn’t get word back some other way, I’ll have to send him another letter.
